How to Use the Pitch F/x Tool

Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind while using the tool:
  1. To select multiple items from a menu, hold the control key as you click each additional item.

  2. As of now, only the first 150 pitches will be displayed in the graphs and only the first 15,000 pitches will be written to the excel file. For large queries, it's important to wait until the "Page Loading" image disappears before clicking the "Download Excel File" button.

  3. The "dynamic strikezone" radio button will use the gameday fields "sz_top" and "sz_bot" (which vary from batter to batter and even pitch to pitch!) to determine the upper and lower limits of the strikezone. When the "static strikezone" button is selected the top and bottom of the zone will be constant for all batters

  4. As of now, the database is only populated with 2009 data. Complete 2008 and 2009 data! 2010 data updated automatically, every day at approximately 5:00AM

  5. You can fill in both "Less Than" and the "Greater Than" fields. For example, you can show all pitches slower than 100mph AND faster than 90mph by entering 100 in the less than field and 90 in greater than. Or, you can show all pitches faster than 90 mph OR slower than 70 mph by entering 70 in the less than field and 90 in the greater than field.

  6. Be creative: by selecting "Called Strike", "Swinging Strike", AND "Swinging Strike (Blocked)" from Result and selecting "0-2", "1-2", "2-2", AND "3-2" from Count you can show all pitches that resulted in a strikeout.
